Here is the finished cone with a drop shadow added.

This is the same method I used to make the nose of my Rocketship.

To produce tenticles, just create a tall thin cone and then go to filter>Distort>shear
Drag the line into a curve and hit OK!

You can start to see the lightning

Adjust levels to bring out the lightning, Cmd/Ctrl+L.

In the levels box: slide the black arrow to the right and the middle one to the right too, until it looks nice and clean

Now to add a bit of color:

Go to Hue/Saturation Cmd/Ctrl+U Click the colorize box and slide the Hue till you like the color.

http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/lightning/lightning.jpg

Now to add it to your image:

Just place the lightning on a layer above your image and change the layer blending mode to "screen". Here I duplicated the lightning layer 2x and rotated it a little.

Here is a cool little effect I just made up. I know this one is going to be popular.

A movie type explosion, complete with flying sparks!

1/
http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/explosion/explosion-1.gif
Put your type on its own layer and render. Right click/Cmd Click on its name in the layers pallette and render type. PS 5.5 calls this rasterize type.

2/
http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/explosion/explosion-2.gif

Now its time to rope us some type! Grab the lasso tool and select a portion of the type.

3/
http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/explosion/explosion-3.gif

Now select the move tool (V)

Drag the selected peice away from the rest.
4/
http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/explosion/explosion-4.gif
Repeat steps 2 and 3 lots of times, using differant selection sizes and shapes, until you get something like this.

5/
http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/explosion/explosion-6.gif

http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/explosion/explosion-5.gif

Duplicate the layer and apply a motion blur>Radial blur = 100 and quality = best

6/
http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/explosion/explosion-6-b.gif

Duplicate the blurred layer 2X

7/
http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/explosion/explosion-7.gif
http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/explosion/explosion-7-b.gif

Set the top blurred layer to Dissolve and bring the opacity to 47%

8/

Change the color of the blurred layers and the sparks using the Hue/Saturation control. Add a black background and "BOOM".
