Huy chương cho người nhận giải thưởng Shaw
Giải thưởng Shaw được thành lập năm 2002, mang tên nhà sáng lập Run Run Shaw, tên tiếng Hoa là Thiệu Dật Phu, một tỉ phú đứng đầu đế chế điện ảnh - truyền hình TVB Hong Kong. Ban giám khảo của giải gồm bốn người, do giáo sư người Mỹ gốc Hoa Dương Tiên Ninh, từng nhận giải Nobel vật lý năm 1957, làm chủ tịch.
Giải thưởng được coi là “Nobel châu Á”, có giá trị 1 triệu USD, sẽ được trao cho các nhà nghiên cứu trong các lĩnh vực toán học, khoa học đời sống và thiên văn học.
Giải thưởng Shaw sẽ được trao cho các cá nhân, bất kể chủng tộc, quốc tịch hay tôn giáo, đã thực hiện được những bước tiến lớn trong nghiên cứu khoa học hay trong ứng dụng, công việc của họ có tác động tích cực và sâu xa đến loài người. Ngoài ra, theo giáo sư Yeung Yueman, trưởng ban chuẩn bị tổ chức giải, Shaw không nhằm mục đích cạnh tranh với giải Nobel, vì nó hướng tới những lĩnh vực mà giải Nobel không quan tâm.
Hằng năm, kết quả được công bố vào tháng 6 và trao giải vào tháng 9. Đến nay, giải thưởng lập tại châu Á này đã được trao cho 43 nhà khoa học thuộc 12 nước, tuy nhiên phần lớn người được giải mang quốc tịch Mỹ.
