A stone tablet fallen from Heaven's Gate is engraved for ever: it has written down
the names and nicknames of the 108 heroes of Mount Liangshang.
The 36 heavenly spirits and the 72 earthly fiends are named
with their qualities (and defaults).
Chao Gai, the Heavenly King, is not part of it.

The 36 Heavenly Spirits

1-Song Jiang
He is the chief of the outlaws.
Nicknamed Timely rain, he is an honest civil servant famous for his sense of justice and quickness to repair the faults of corrupted administration.
He suffers in silence of the arbitrariness and corruption of the imperial justice.
Infinitely modest, he has no cease to deny any authority among the Outlaws of Water Margin, who recognize him as a chief, and to propose that responsability to every man he admires.
Deeply respectuous of the Emperor's authority, he suffers from the clandestinity he is obliged to bear, because of the not-willing murder of his lover, an unfaithful prostitute.
He killed her accidentally because she was up to denounce his friendship with Chao Gai, the Heavenly King, and other outlaws.
He is the unwilling hero of the novel.

2-Lu Jun-yi
Nicknamed the Jade Unicorn, Lu Jun-yi is one of the Three Remarkable Men of Hebei Province. Highly skilled in the martial arts, he has no equal with a cudgel.
After Chao Gai's death, Song Jiang wants him to join the outlaws. It will need all the sense of strategy of Wu Yong to lure him out of Daming and take him to meet the Timely Rain.
Disguised as a Taoist priest and escorted by Li Kui, Wu Yong predicts for Lu Jun-yi a violent death and the ruin of his family within a hundred days.
Frightened, Lu Jun-yi decides to follow the advice of the Wizard and to leave the Northern Capital.
That was the aim of the outlaws who will capture him and take him to Song Jiang.
He will first refuse to join the gang but, betrayed by his wife and his intendant, he will be sent to jail.
He will be saved by his adoptive son Yan Qing. Together, they will reach the Liang Shang Marsh and he will become the first captain of Song Jiang's outlaws.

3-Wu Yong
He is the most clever of the stategists and a foundating member of the Liang-Shang Marsh gang. This scholar, friend of the Heavenly King, Chao Gai, is nicknamed The Wizard.
He convinced the Ruan brothers to join the team that seized the Birthday Presents and elaborated the machiavelous plan to succeed in
that operation. Sophisticated plans and disinformation plots are the main words of Wu Yong who will second the Timely Rain, Song Jiang, using guile whenever force is not sufficient.
Conceptor of the brilliant plot of the Birthday Giftts, he appears in the first chapters of the novel.

4-Gong-sun Sheng
Gongsun Sheng, aka Dragon in the Clouds, is a Taoist priest. He practices magic and can "summon the wind and bring the rain, ride the mist and drive the clouds".
He will join Chao Gai and Wu Yong to form the Righteous Seven with the Ruan Brothers and Liu Tang. Together, they will attack the convoy of the Birthday Gifts.
He will take part of the first Liangshang Marsh gang and his magic and fighting talents will be very useful. But he will retire to study with Luo, a saint taoist man, and Dai Zong and Li Kui will have to prove all their determination to bring him back in the Marsh when Song Jiang and his men are in difficulties, facing numerous armies and the powers of an other magician.
He is the incarnation of Tranquillity among the Heavenly Stars.

5-Guan Sheng
As shown on this paper-cut, the favorite weapon of Guan Sheng is a big hallberd. Direct descendant of a famous general of the Han Dynasty, he is called in reinforcement by the Empire when the Northern Capital, Daming, is attacked by Song Jiang.
Incarnating "bravery", he suggests a daring strategy : he intends to attack the Liang Shan
Marsh fortress to weaken the troops of Song Jiang based around Daming.
With his captains, Xuan Zan et Hao Si-wen, he will win some battles and even capture Zhang Heng and Ruan the 7th but will be caught in a trap.
Captured, he will be persuaded by Song Jiang of the justice of the outlaws fight and join their ranks.

6-Lin Chong
Valiance is the major feature of Lin Chong, aka the Panther Head.
"A head like a panther, round eyes, a chin sharp as a swallow's beak, whiskers like a tiger and very tall", here is Lin Chong, arms instructor of the Mighty Imperial Guards.
Young, handsome, respected in the army, he will not resist to the plot set up against him by the son of his superior, a good-for-nothing who lusts after his faithful wife. Victim of a scheming, he will be accused of murder attempt.
Thanks to a tribunal revolted by the situation, his condamnation will resume in golden marks on his cheeks (a tattoo) and bannishment.
But his rival will attempt to have him murdered several times on his road to exile.
Lu Zhi Shen will save his life and Chai Jin will send him to the Liangshan Po refuge.
As a trained soldier, he will be a great help during the episode of the Chained Cavalry and will be the one who beats Ten Feet of Steel during the Attacks on Zhu Family Village .
His story is the subject of a novel and an Opera: the Wild Boar Forest.

7-Qin Ming
The Thunderbolt, Qin Ming is bad tempered. Great military, he is able to commit the worst errors because he is in anger. Using a wolf toothed mace as shown in the paper-cut, he will fight the outlaws led by Song Jiang and Hua Rong.
Hua Rong will win by guile but will have to deceive him to have him join the outlaws gang.
Using his armour, horse and weapons, he will send a man to attack and slaughter a whole village and prevent our loyal officer to turn back to his duty.

8-Hu-yuan Zhuo
The Emperor summonned himself Hu-yuan Zhuo to lead the Imperial Armies who will thoroughly purge the Liangshan Marsh and get rid of the outlaws who plunder cities and robber granaries.
Heir of of a famous general, Hu-yan Zhuo wields two steel rods and has a peerless courage.
The Emperor presented him with Ebony Steed Which Treads in Snow, an extraordinay horse that can cover a thousand li in a single day.
Seconded by Peng Qi, the Eyes of Heaven General, et Han Tao, the Ever Victorious General.
Thanks to his strategist gifts, his numerous troops, and the Armoured Cavalry, he will win some battles against the outlaws but finally will be fought.
After his fighting with the Kong brothers, he will join the gang of Song Jiang.

9-Hua Rong
Son of a military commander that proved his loyalty to Imperial authority, Hua Rong is the military commandant of the Fort Clear Wind. Close friend of Song Jiang, he sent many messages to tell our hero he would be wellcome in his house. Extraordinary skilled with a
bow and arrows, he will show all his talent convincing Qin Ming to join the Liangshan Marsh gang.
Nicknamed the Little Li Guang, he is as clever as talented.

10-Chai Jin
Nicknamed Small Whirlwind, Chai Jin is a notable descending from the Later Zhou Dynasty royal family. His passion is to meet martial arts experts and to help them when they wander on chinese roads and hide from the imperial justice.
He saves the brave "Leopard Head", Lin Chong during the laster's adventures, but returns to his life of wealthy and idle aristocrat until his action in
favour of the courageous outlaws take him to join the Liang Shan Mount. From then, he will be one of the captains of the gang, respected for his warrior's gifts as for his social status.
He incarnates the virtue of Nobility within the constellation of heavenly spirits.

11-Li Ying
Li Ying is the squire of one of the three villages of the Lonesome Dragon Mount.
Being near from the Liangshan Mount and its gang, the 3 families Li, Zhu and Hu made an alliance to help each other in case of an attack.Together, they rule over 20.000 soldiers,
ready to defend their strongholds.
He will try to help Shi Qian but will get in conflict with the Zhu Family and will even be wounded by one of them. He will help Song Jiang to defeat the arrogant Zhu and join the Liangshan Po bold men.

12-Zhu Tong
As Lei Heng, the Winged Tiger , Zhu Tong, alias Beautiful Beard is a constable sent to arrest Chao Gai after the Birthday Gifts robbery. Very tall, with a luxuriant beard, he comes from a wealthy family and is a chivalrous, generous man with many friends among the gallant fraternity. Not knowing Lei Heng had exactly the same intentions, he will manage to let Chao Gai flee. He will act in the same way when sent to arrest
Song Jiang but will be bannished when he let Lei Heng escape. On exile in Cangzhou, he is chosen by the prefect as his attendant. He is shown on this paper-cut carrying the prefect's little son. Li Kui sent by Song Jiang to convince Zhu Tong to join the outlaws. Li Kui will kill the boy to prevent Beautiful Beard to return.
Zhu Tong will accept to the condition that Li Kui does not return to Liangshan Po.

13-Lu Zhi Shen
Strange is the destiny of Lu Da, that garrison major that nothing destined to become a buddhist monk and, later, a captain of the Liangshang outlaws... nothing except his quick temper and his hate for injustice.
A few time after encountering Nine Dragons, Shi Jin, he will commit a murder to save a poor girl and her father, victims of the persecutions of a notable.
Condemned to escape from Imperial justice, he will shave his hair and beard to get refuge in a monastery .
Unable to refrain his violent temper and his taste for wine, he will be sent from a monastery to another, no abbott willing to keep this unusual monk.
Nicknamed the Tattoed Monk, he will travel alone for a long time, incarnating the quality of Loneliness.
In spite of his many defaults, he is one of those likeable characters Chinese literature created, as Sun Wu Kong, the famous Monkey King.

14-Wu Song
Wu Song, is one of the most likeable heroes of the novel. Younger brother of Wu the Elder, he is as tall as his brother is small, as strong as the latter is weak.He will meet Song Jiang in Chai Jin's manor but he will soon leave to see his brother.
On his way, he will kill with his bare hands a tiger that terrifies the whole prefecture in Jingyang Ridge and will become the constable of the county where he finds his brother.
During a mission that makes him leave the town for several weeks, his brother will be poisoned by
his wife and the latter's lover. Getting no justice from the authorities, Wu Song will kill the culprits and will be sentenced to bannishment.
He will then meet Shi En and become his sworn brother and get into trouble to help his new friend.
He is nicknamed the Pilgrim because he is used to wander alone disguised as a monk. He represents the Injury among the 36 Heavenly Stars.
His only default: he drinks too much and gets mad when drunk. Song Jiang who likes him very much will warn him several times about that.

15-Dong Ping
Dong Ping is the military commander of DongPing. He is known as General Double Spears because he's skilled with two spears. Song Jiang and his men are intending to attack this town because they are short of money and grain. Having heard of the valiance and the courage of the general, he decides to send him a letter to urge him to surrender. But Dong Ping has the messengers beaten and driven from the town.
Several captains of the outlaws will fight against him but in vain. Only an embuscade will allow his capture.His meeting with the Timely Rain will be decisive: furious against the civil commander of the town who refused to give him his daughter as a wife, he will accept to join the band and to give the town to our heroes.
He will slaughter the whole family of the civil commander.

16-Zhang Qing
Formerly a member of the Imperial Cavalry, the general Zhang Qing is nicknamed Featherless Arrow because he flings stones with a remarkable accuracy. With his two captains, Gong Wang and Ding De-sun, he defends the town of Dongchang besieged by Lu Jun-yi and the outlaws.
He will defeat 15 captains of the outlaws in a row and capture Liu Tang. It will need all the ruse of Wu Yong, the magic of Gong-sun Cheng and all the talent of the navy captains of Song Jiang to capture this brilliant enemy.
The fight against him will be the last of the creation of the gang. With him and Huang-fu Dang, the outlaws are 108, 36 heavenly spirits and 72 Earthly Fiends.
Zhang Qing incarnates Victory.

17-Yang Zhi
Nicknamed the Blue-Faced Beast because of the blue birthmark on his face, Yang Zhi is a tall man, issued from three generations of generals.
Bad lucky, he would have become a general himself but he was the one of the 10 generals who lost his ship on the Imperial "Stones and Plants" mission and was exiled for that.
Arriving to Daiming, the Eastern capital, he was saved by his gifts for arms but his road crossed Chao Gai's on the Birthday Gifts episode and he bacame an outlaw. His meeting with the Panther Head, Lin Chong, will be determinant in his decision to join the Liangshang Marsh outlaws.

18-Xu Ning
Xu Ning, the Golden Lancer is the arms instructor of the Metal Lancers in the Eastern Capital. He is the single to know how to use the barbed lances able to defeat the armoured cavalry. To have him join the outlaws of Song Jiang, Lin Chong who has met him during his military existence imagines a plan. Tang Long, his cousin, will be sent with Dai Zong and Shi Qian to steal the marvellous Goose Feathers Armour, his family treasure. To recover his treasure, Xu Ning will not hesitate to leave the Eastern Capital. Far from his home, he will be convinced by Song Jiang to join the band and will bring victory against the Chained Cavalry led by Huyuan Zhuo.

19-Suo Chao
Captain in the guards regiment of Daming Prefecture, Suo Chao is a valiant and loyal officer.
His only default is his "temper as explosive as a pinch of salt in the fire". Armed with his golden axe, he will fight with Li Cheng against the
outlaws led by Song Jiang.But seriously wounded, he will be captured by the Outlaws of the Marsh.
He symbolises Voidness and represents all the qualities and defaults of a soldier.

20-Dai Zong
Quickness is the quality represented by Dai Zong in the constellation of Heavenly Stars.
Able to run hundreds of lis in a day, the Magic Messenger, will be very useful to Liangshan Po bold warriors.
In a country as vast as China, where towns are so far away and all trips are made walking, his talents are very appreciated.
Taoist, he has just to wrap a picture of a god around each of his legs to get his magic power and run as fast as the wind. Getting news or fetching heroes is the speciality of this close friend of Wu Yong who will save Song Jiang when the latter will be exiled to Jiangzhou.
He can transmitt part of his powers to other heroes as long as they restrain from drinking wine and eating meat. Not so simple for a drunkard as Li Kui.

21-Liu Tang
Nicknamed the Read Haired Demon, Liu Tang because of the red marks on his temples. Wandering on Chinese roads, he learnt about the Birthday Gifts convoy. As soon as he heard of it, he rushes at Chao Gai's to propose him to attack the convoy.
He is one of the Righteous Seven, the little gang led by Chao Gai and Wu Yong who prefigure the LiangShang Marsh famous one.

22-Li Kui
Rough and unrestrained, Li Kui, the Black Whirlwind , is a mighty figure. Only Dai Zong can restrain him from killing and using his two axes. When drunken, he is able to fight with everyone even if he has no reason to do so.
However, Song Jiang appreciates his qualities
and will protect him in the gang even if he punishes him several times for his slaughters.
He incarnates the Murder among the 36 Heavenly stars.
He is the hero of a famous Beijing Opera, The Black Whirlwind .

23-Shi Jin
Shi Jin owes his nickname, Nine Dragons, to the many tattoes on his body. Son of a wealthy landowner, he will have many martial arts teachers.
Among them, Li Zhong and the famous military instructor, Wang Jin, who, injustly purchased, will find a refuge in his father's manor.
Skilled and trained for the fight with the 18
traditional weapons, he is an outstanding warrior.He will first fight the 3 chiefs of the Mount Shaohua , Zhu Wu, the Miraculous Strategist, Chen Da, the Gorge-leaping Tiger, and Yang Chun, the White-spotted Snake, before he becomes their sworn brother. To save them, he will burn his own manor and go underground, becoming an estimate captain of the Liangshang outlaws.In the novel, he incarnates the virtue of Subtility.

23-Mu Hong
Mu Hong, the Unrestrained, and Mu Chun, the Slightly Restrained, are brothers. Sons of a wealthy family, they reign over Jieyang town.
Jealous of their authority, they won't appreciate the coming of Xue Yong.
Song Jiang, on his journey to exile will stir up their hate and they will almost kill him.
Happily Zhang Heng and Li Li will get through and prevent our hero from getting murdered.

24-Lei Heng
As Zhu Tong, Beautiful Beard , Lei Heng , the Winged Tiger is a constable. He received the order to arrest the Heavenly King, Chao Gai, accused to have stolen the Birthday Gifts sent by the governor of Eastern Capital to his father-in-law.
He intends to let Chao Gai flee, but Zhu Tong is faster and saves our hero. He will have to quit his function when convicted for the murder of a ***** and, thanks to Zhu Tong, he will escape and join the outlaws of Liangshang Marsh and Song Jiang.

25-Li Jun
The Turbulent River Dragon, Li Jun, is only a fisherman on the Yang Zi Jiang river ( Yang Tse Kiang). He would be an ordinary man if he had not a rare gift in ancient China : He can swim.
That will often be of a great help to Liang Shan captains when he joins the gang. He will save Song Jiang on his trip to exile and ridiculise Li Kui when he meets him..


26-The Ruan Brothers
Ruan the 2nd, the 5th and the 7th are brothers Their nicknames Ferocious Giant, Recklessly Rash and Devil Incarnate reveal their warriors aptitudes.
Living in the Stone Tablet village, near from Chao Gai's home, they have been chosen by Wu Yong to be party of the Birthday Gifts robbery.
They were born, grown up and live near the Liangshan Marsh. That means they are perfectly at ease among ridges and on water in a universe where best soldiers cannot compete with mere fishermen.
These qualities will be very useful for the outlaws and they will be responsible for the naval forces and fights. Slaughter, Crime and Disaster are the "virtues" associated to these Earthly Fiends.

27-Zhang Heng
The Boat Flame, Zhang Heng is a smuggler. With his brother Zhang Shun, he as a peculiar business. He takes passengers on his boat to cross the river. When arrived in the middle, he asks for money. His brother disguised as a
peddlar refuses and that extraordinay swimmer get drowned. The others passengers do not dare to refuse to pay for the trip. Song Jiang will nearly be killed but his friend Li Jun will save him.
